Rafineria Gdańska Sp. z o. o. manages one of the most modern production and processing plants in this part of Europe. The refinery receives and processes crude oil into high-margin products. Its processing capacity is over 10 million tons of oil per year. The company currently employs nearly 1,300 people.
Following reorganisation of the then LOTOS Group, all refining operations based in Gdańsk were integrated into a single entity in November 2021. The entity was then transformed from a production and trading company (operating under the name LOTOS Asfalt Sp. z o.o. until July 19th 2022) into a production-only company.
The new joint venture structure was created as a result of the acquisition of Grupa LOTOS S.A. by ORLEN S.A. and, with Aramco Overseas Company B.V. joining as a partner with an equity stake of 30%.
Together with its asset base, Rafineria Gdańska Sp. z o.o. is opening a new chapter in the history of Gdańsk’s refining industry, which dates back to March 1st 1972 when Rafineria Nafty Gdańsk w Budowie was established. Its name was subsequently changed to Gdańskie Zakłady Rafineryjne, Rafineria Gdańska S.A. and finally Grupa LOTOS S.A.
The most recent landmark capital investment project implemented at the refinery (worth PLN 2.3bn) was the EFRA Project. The project execution was entrusted in 2014 to the then LOTOS Asfalt. The units built as part of the project came on stream in late 2019, with the most important ones comprising the Coking Complex. Its key facilities include a delayed coking unit (DCU) that converts the heaviest crude fractions into fuel intermediates and petroleum coke. In addition to raising throughput capacity, the EFRA Project helped to eliminate production of high-sulfur heavy fuel oil.
